Automating cell prep with Laminar Wash–SLAS 2021

Description

Laminar Wash technology offers a centrifuge-less sample preparation method that can be readily automated. Our presentation at the Society for Laboratory Automation and Screening (SLAS) 2021 conference, Curiox Applications Scientist Ann Wang and Sales Manager Dr. Darren Warnick discussed cell prep automation.

In the first part of the talk, Dr. Darren Warnick from the Hamilton Company outlines the challenges and complexities of automating centrifuge-based workflows, including:

  • Need for a liquid handler to add samples/reagents and decant supernatants
  • Footprint of additional devices (plate handling arms, liquid handling, etc)
  • Centrifuge vibration interfering with pipetting
  • Difficulties of tube and/or plate retrieval and constant recalibration

For the second half (10:34) Curiox’s Application Scientist Ann Wang demonstrates how our Laminar Wash™ technology represents the “next generation” approach to automating sample prep, sans centrifuge, including:

  • How the centrifuge impacts your cells (hint: it’s not pretty)
  • Options for integrating Laminar Wash™ to automate cell prep workflows
  • Consistency across users for automated analysis of rare (<1%) cell populations
  • Improved reproducibility of flow cytometry data compared to that obtained from the centrifuge
